Is it more practical to keep buying my son DVDs to watch or to just get cable?
My son is 2 1/2, and severely Autistic. He isn’t into toys, he doesn’t have any playmates, he is non-verbal, and can’t do a lot of things other 2 1/2 year olds would do because he has sensory dysfunctions that cause him to go into sensory overload and stim. Like bright lights, cause him to go into self-stimming mode, by hand flapping, which helps him to try to see more clearly, and the lights hurt his eyes. Kids talking, and loud sounds, cause him to go into sensory overload, and resort to hiding in another room, or hiding in his closet. So his one outlet that he really enjoys, besides going outside and sliding or swinging, when the weather isn’t bad, is to watch his DVD’s. But he has at least 20 DVD’s of Blues Clues, Backyardigans, Ni-Hao Kailan, Lil Bill, Max and Ruby, Veggie Tales, Barney, Lazy Town, Dora (which he hates with a passion), Jack’s Music Band, Yo Gabba Gabba. The only thing he likes on QUBO, which is 24 hour cartoons on non cable, is Pecola, and maybe 3-2-1 Penguins, but this doesn’t keep his attention for long. He is sick and tired of all of these, but when he goes to Great Granny’s house, which she does have cable, he watches Noggin channel. Then he will watch all of the cartoons I named, because they are all different episodes that he hasn’t seen before. So what I’m asking is I know some people think tv is bad, but my son is special needs, he goes to daycare 5 days a week, and has therapist in and out 4 days a week, for hour long therapy sessions, so this is just something he likes to do to wind down. So should I get cable, so he can watch fresh episodes of his favorite cartoons, or keep buying DVD’s on sale that he will eventually get tired of and not want to watch anymore?
I don’t rent movies from the library anymore, because they are so scratched up, from other careless users that you can’t even see the movie.
I think you already know the answer. Either get cable or start borrowing DVD’s from the library. Its not practical to be wasting so much money on DVD’s.

we don’t have cable. pbs has a lot of good shows for that age group to supplement dvds.

I don’t know about your cable company but ours has a $20 a month plan that’s just family programing and they include all the kids channels local channels and some discovery and TLC, nothing extravagant, probably less than 50 channels. You might want to look into what your local company offers, I mean $20 a month is about 2 dvds a month? If you can fit it into your budget I say do it.

yes, get it. i don’t know the pricing where you live, but check around. direct tv and dish network both have a family channel price, that mostly plays kids channels, that is cheaper than the regular price.

I’d give the cable a try i mean it’s not going to hurt anything plus you’ll benefit from it too by having something different to watch. You could also buy him some leap frog learning toys, blocks, books and puzzles. Just think for all of those DVD’s that can cover your cable bill.
Sweet&Sexy Baby Boy Due 2/6/10 | Nov 20, 2009
Sweetie, you have a child that is very high maintenance, you cant compare your parenting to that of a parent with children that dont have special needs, because your boy is needing such care you do whats best for him, and honestly you are spending a lot more on dvds than you would on cable, do this for your son. Good luck.

Cable is so expensive. You should consider Netflix for the DVD’s, it doesn’t cost a lot and you can get many different shows on disk and some even play right on your computer. For 15.00 a month you and he can have new movies and tv shows to watch and enjoy without any limit on how long you keep them, and when you are done, you just mail them back in the envelope they provide that is prepaid. I honestly like it more than television. Also, with the busy life you have with taking care of him, it is easier on you to not have to fight with cable or going to stores to buy movies, you can pick them out at night when he goes to bed and take a break for a little bit.
